Tara Hardy teaches memoir classes at Seattle’s Richard Hugo House. Registration is open for her next class, Letting Objects Tell the Story.

This course will cover all elements of the craft of memoir, with special focus on the use of repeating objects. Students will learn how to infuse their prose with a poetic element, one that “lets the objects tell the story.” Images are as important to a memoir as narrative tension. Consciously inventing a pattern of images not only heightens the artistic value of your book, but also creates a pleasing symmetry for the reader. Using a workshop format, we’ll read and discuss published work, examining characterization, narrative tension, dialogue, language, setting, scenes, and images. Students will have the opportunity to receive feedback from the teacher on their writing at least once.
